Diggers With Attitude
Starting life as a university project, Diggers With Attitude went on to become one of my most profound experiences with original work. For a textual studies class we were tasked with turning a scene from a book into a musical scene. I turned a small scripted scene that a friend had written from Louis Sachar's "Holes" into an homage to Lin Manuel Miranda's "Hamiliton". The project quickly gained traction and with some support form Louis Sachar we put on the production at our university.
I wrote the music and lyrics to this hip hop adaptation which (for legals reasons) we named "Diggers With Attitude". With the support of some of our tutors we were able to showcase a small section of the show at the Soho Theater in London.
In this stage adaptation of Holes we explore the Yelnats' cursed story that began over 200 years ago. This condensed version of the opening act demonstrates but a glimpse of the complex plot about ancestry and fate. Workshopped with minimal set and props to allow the music and choreography to tell the story, this piece of new writing has been tremendous fun to put together and a great ongoing challenge, brilliantly met by all the cast and creative team.
An abridged version of the first act can be found below.
