Recreation of Adam (2021)

Mandy and I began creating this diptych in February 2021. Creating these pieces involved a variety of textures and stages. There is melted crayon, sand, plaster, acrylic paint, ink, sawdust, and spray-paint creating the background and soft-glow behind the gold leaf.

On the left, for Michelangelo's hand of Adam we decided to use red to represent the turbulence, passion, and vibrancy of mankind. There was some inspiration also taken from the Hebrew word for red 'Edom' which is also the colour of the clay in the middle eastern parts that the creation story is said to have taken place. As the name 'Adam' is Hebrew for 'man' and he is also said to have been created from the earth, it was an obvious choice to chose a red background.

On the right, the hand of God we used the same materials but applied them more with a brush and blending tools to represent a smoother and calmer background. Blue is commonly associated with divinity and as the opposite to red it was an obvious choice.
